Our Online courses give aspiring knitwear designers everywhere the opportunity to explore fantastic machine knit techniques widely used in the fashion industry and then to develop their own, personal projects.
Each participant will receive feedback and advice from a dedicated tutor and the wider tutorial team at Knit-1.
Every course is structured around creative and exciting technical skills which will be delivered via a series of tutorial films and comprehensive supporting text. The films are all made on location in our Brighton design studio, during real classes.
Having worked through the films, each participant will be invited to work on a creative, personal assignment based on the skills developed. This final project will be assessed by the knit-1 tutorial team

Machine Knit suitable for Brother, Knitmaster, Silver Reed, Toyota etc
Introduces the basics of using the domestic single bed machine, a must for all beginners. You will be taught everything you need to make fabric on the machine, yarn counts, holding cams and colour changing on the machine. This course introduces stripes as a design element and encourages to use striping in a creative way.
Machine Knit Online Course 2 –
Learn how to create lace effect fabrics. You’re introduced with how to move stitches to make different size holes and pointelle patterns and how to make larger holes and slits using the holding cams.
This course also teaches the use of the lace carriage and introduces lace punch cards.
This course teaches how to make a basic garment. You will learn how to shape garments on the machine, how to create different necklines, trims, finishes and pockets.
Also includes a tutorial on how to use the ribber attachment and make a basic rib. Comes with a basic sweater pattern.
Machine Knit Online Course 4 –
This course focuses on learning to use the different functions on the carriage and the machine.
You’ll learn how to use the punch card to create a jacquard, tuck stitch and slip stitch for colourful patterns, placement motifs and tuck stitch textures.
The cable course teaches how to make basic cables using the prong tools.
It also introduces complicated techniques like basket weave and diagonal cable.
You will also learn how to use the holding cams to create large and freestyle cables.
During the curves and contours course you are introduced to creating shaping on the machine and detailing garments without seams. You will learn how to shape garments to fit the body and how to create volume but tutorials also include techniques that create 3 dimensional textures on material.
This course is a comprehensive package to learn how to create various fabrics on the industrial V-beds. You will learn the basics of the cam system, casting on and off and the use of different needles. The reading material has clear instructions on how to use the cams and how to set up needles for each technique.
